About
the Piano
Every year, more and more people discover how much fun it is to
make their own music at home, and every year more and more people
start to learn and play the piano. This is not really surprising, because
the piano is an enjoyable instrument to play, and it produces a
very pleasant sound.
The piano is also a very versatile instrument. It can be used to
play the melody of a tune, or the melody and backing together, or
it can provide a pleasing accompaniment for other instruments and
for singing. It can be played on its own, within a group or band,
or in an orchestra.
The piano has a larger range of notes than most of the instruments
in an orchestra and is suitable for almost every different style
of music. This makes it excellent for learning music, and for composing
and arranging. Beginners of all ages can make pleasant sounding
music almost immediately on the piano, because the notes are easy
to find and play.
Above all, it is a satisfying and entertaining instrument - both
beginners and experienced players will find an almost limitless
variety of music which can be played on the piano.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PIANOS
There are basically two different types of pianos - grand pianos
and upright pianos. Grand pianos have their strings arranged horizontally,
rather like a harp lying on its side. The very first pianos were
made in this way, although they did not look much like the modern
grand piano.
Upright pianos, as their name suggests, have their strings and most
of their working parts arranged vertically. Both types of piano
come in various shapes and sizes, but they are all basically similar
to play. The main parts of the piano which you can see from the
outside are named on the facing page.
