Buying a Piano
part 1
Buying a piano is a great adventure, particularly if you have never
owned one before and you may want to have one for your piano lessons. A good piano is an investment which should bring
you a great deal of pleasure and be your pride and joy for many
years.
If you have already started to look at pianos, you will realise
there is a very large choice of instruments on the market. There
are pianos in many different shapes and sizes, at various prices.
There are pianos which look like pianos, and pianos which look like
any one of a dozen different styles of furniture with various wooden
or painted finishes. A great selection, but how do you decide which
is best for you? Before you do anything, read these friendly words
of advice to make sure you are buying the right type of piano and
getting good value for your money.
SIZE. As a general rule, large pianos are the best
pianos because they have sufficient internal space for long strings
and large soundboards - both of which are needed to produce a mellow
tone and good volume. Your first choice should therefore be the
largest piano which will fit into your home. However If you would like to purchase one for your piano lessons (or teaching piano lessons) and you may not be able to afford an bigger size piano in the beginning ofcourse in you can purchase a smaller one first and then as you get better at it buy a bigger size.
GRAND PIANOS. If you can find sufficient space
in your home for your piano lessons, and can afford the purchase price, a grand piano is
the best choice.
So, before you consider anything else or before you decide to learn and have your piano lessons at home, measure your home and see
if you have room for a grand. You should bear in mind the advice
given on page 16 about the best place for a piano, before you finally
decide. The usual sizes of grand pianos are given here:
The largest grand pianos, concert grands, are the finest pianos made. Most pianists dream of owning one because they are a joy to play and produce the finest tone. However, they are unfortunately too large for most homes and too large and un affordable for basic piano lessons.
The next choice should be for a medium grand - most of these are fine instruments, well-suited for use in the home and for teaching piano lessons and for adult learning. Third choice should be a small grand piano, the right piano for beginners piano lessons. Do not despair if your home is not large enough to take a grand piano - many full-size uprights and studio pianos are as good as small grands.
