Buying
a Piano
part 2
UPRIGHT PIANOS. For your beginners piano lessons, you could always use an Upright Piano.
The overall height of an upright
piano is a good guide to the musical quality of the instrument.
Note that all upright pianos need approximately the same amount
of floor space - about 5' (150cm) by 2' (30cm), except for the narrower
64 note spinet.

First choice for musical quality should be a full-size upright or
a studio piano. Second choice should be a console piano perhaps for starting your beginners piano lessons, although
here you are compromising musical quality for the sake of price
or appearance as a piece of furniture.
Spinet pianos, particularly the narrower 64 note spinets, come last
as musical instruments. These pianos are not large enough to allow
room for a proper working mechanism, a good size soundboard or sufficiently
long strings to ensure a good quality tone or volume. Also, 64 note
spinets do not have the full range of eighty-eight notes of a full-size
piano.
SHOP AROUND BEFORE YOU BUY NEW OR USED PIANO. Spend some time shopping around and
compare as many different pianos as possible both new and used piano. Even if you do not
play at all or just beginnning to learn to play the piano, you can learn a lot about the different pianos which
are available by talking to piano dealers and reading the brochures
which makers supply.
Specialist piano stores are the best places to look at pianos. Good
piano dealers will understand new piano and used piano, understand what you want, give useful advice
and help you to compare different pianos without rushing you to
make a decision. Look for piano stores in your 'Yellow Pages', or
in music magazines or newspapers.
If you can, visit stores on weekdays when the sales people should
have more time to spend with you. Take some time before you piano lessons to do this. Go to as many stores as possible
to see a wide range of pianos, and try to find dealers who take
a pride in the quality of their pianos because they will give the
best advice.Ask to be shown the insides of pianos which interest
you, and have the internal features explained, so you will know
which piano is best.
