More interesting left-hand parts

So far you have used your left hand to add two-note chords or single 'bass' notes to the melodies of tunes you have played. In this next step, you will put the two together, so you play bass notes and harmony under a melody. This adds rhythm to a tune, and makes the left hand part more interesting. Try this:

Rest your left-hand fingers lightly on the keys with the thumb (1) on G and the little finger (5) on C. Then, follow these instructions:

  1. Play C with your little finger (5).
  2. Play E and G together with your middle finger (3) and the thumb (1), lifting your little finger off C as the other fingers press down.
  3. Play E and G together again.

    Do this several times, while you slowly count 1 2 3 1 2 3

(Remember that A is on the top line of the stave - above G.)
