As
you have seen in previous pages, sharps, flats and naturals may
be written into music when they are needed to play particular pieces
of music. However, sharps and flats are often so much a part of
the music that they are shown right at the beginning of each stave,
immediately after the clefs. These sharp and flat signs at the beginning
of music are called 'Key Signatures' and they tell us which 'key'
the music is in.
Each
sharp or flat sign of the key signature is written in the position
of a note. It affects ALL NOTES in the music which have the same
name as the note marked. Here, the sharp sign is in the position
of an 'F note (shown in brackets). It means EVERY F must be 'sharpened'
