Starting to Play

The way you sit and position your arms and hands is very important, because it affects how well and how easily you are able to play.

Your back should always be straight, leaning forward slightly with your shoulders relaxed.Your upper arms should be vertical, your forearms and hands should make a straight horizontal line when your fingertips are resting on the keys.

Above all, feel comfortable and relaxed whenever you sit at your piano.


Move the seat backwards or forwards until your upper arm is vertical when your fingertips are on the keys. Sit on a firm cushion if your seat is not high enough for your forearms and hands to be straight and horizontal. Then read on...
